Everything evolves, even Chattel houses. In this instance the wood house is dead or dying and out of its wretched soul is the rising of a Wall (brick) House. Even though many Chattel houses can be seen around the island, they are fast becoming a thing of the past.

It may not be in the greatest shape, but it looks like it has a story to tell
ReplyDeleteI remember one of the housed I grew up was all wood. My Aunt then transformed the back of the house into wall, which was really the new bathroom. Amazingly the house progressed like that until it reached the front section. Afterward, it became a wall (brick) house.
ReplyDeleteMy selfish side wants these houses to remain wooden chattels for ever, peeling paint and cracks and all.
ReplyDeleteOf course that's pure selfishness, because the residents should be able to convert their houses to make them mor modern and more comfortable! :)
I just wish there was a way to maintain the look, feel and character of the chattels.
Ann, I feel the same way, but I guess there is no turning back progress.

Gaby, thanks for viewing the blog. And yes, there is something special about Chattel Houses and small Wall Houses in Barbados. There is certain flair to them.
