Chances are if you grew up in Barbados circa 1963 or after, you have this building and others like it to thank for the schools meals you received. In 1962 the Government of Barbados thought it necessary that primary school children be served a hot meal. So in March of 1963 the establishment of the School Meals Programme was initiated.

In 1974 the facility at Country Road was opened. The premises of the office were a play ground for many kids in the Garden Land. I hunted many doves to the back of the property.

But another old building on the property that acts as an office has more history to it. This soft-stone house (villa) was once the home of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the property was called ‘Palm Villa’. As I understand it from some of the elders in the Garden Land the white couple that lived there gave the property to the government.

To be sure, I benefited from the Barbados School Meals Programme. I had my fare share of milk, biscuits, and the wonderful lunch meals that were provided.
