The Box Cart
Bay Street, Bridgetown
St. Michael, Barbados
Series: From Bush Hill to the Old Eye Hospital
(07-27-2007)
The Bajan Box Cart is another forgotten all purpose tool. Used for carrying just about any materials, from wood to coconuts; you can still see them throughout the island. The shapes may vary, but the function is the same.
In the old days the box cart was made from scraps of wood and other materials. The load could have been sand, marl, rocks or gravel, fruits and vegetables, or any another conceivable thing you wanted to carry from point A to B. Many times I have seen them used to push local vendor’s product to market.
