You are looking at almost a full case of JU-C soft drink bottles. It is an oddity because over 90 percent of the carbonated soft drinks bottled in Barbados are now in plastic containers. So this case has obviously been sitting there on the property of the decaying Old White Men’s Home for some time. You can say the empty bottles fits in with the old place.

The red JU-C (Cola Champagne) was my favorite flavor in the 1970s. My father loved the red JU-C with milk. He was almost fanatical with this concoction. But, during second and third form in secondary school, I loved the PINE JU-C. I just could not get enough of them. Now, any JU-C would do. They were on their way out some time ago. Let’s us hope the JU-C will be around in Barbados for years to come. JU-C is now bottled by SMJ Beverages (Barbados) Inc.

The Breadfruit, yes, The Breadfruit, it deserves that introduction. However, I am not going to ramble on about the history of this popular Barbadian fruit. But I will tell you that I have eaten enough roasted breadfruits as a kid to sink William Bligh’s ship, the HMS Bounty.

Even though roasted breadfruit is my favorite, pickled and cooked breadfruit can and will command my utmost attention. This fruit is so versatile that you can have breadfruit cou cou, breadfruit flour, breadfruit chips, fried breadfruit, cooked breadfruit, breadfruit fish cakes, and many more lovely recipes.

If you have never tasted a piece of breadfruit then I suggest you not waste any more time and go get some.

Even amongst the decaying property you still have lush surroundings. You can go so far in saying the grounds of the Old White Men’s Retirement Home looks as though a landscaper worked magic, leaving a lovely wild but manicured landscape.

So to witness these vibrant flowers is an indication of hope and maybe a sign the property will me purchased and restore to its glory.

Old White Men’s Retirement Home Revisited

The Decay of a Retirement Home

The Old White Men’s Retirement Home is in the same derelict state it has been for quite some years now. The condition is becoming worst. The roof is about 80 percent fallen in and it won’t be much longer before the rest finally collapses.

The front gate is padlocked. But who is it keeping out? Vagrants are using the property and the estate is regularly plundered for its much valued fruits. I entered the property like I did when I was a child. The Fordes Road side has a break in the fence and much of the fence from the Country Road entry has falling apart.

There is a FOR SALE sign up and the asking price is a mere 2 million. Looking from the street you see the massive wall structure. But what may not be obvious is the near 2 acres or more of land. My underlying wish is to have this property and restore it. I knew this place as a white men’s retirement home. Before that I am not sure what it was. It may have been a farmhouse since most of this area was plantation land at some point.

The images in this set documents the state of the property now. The second floor has completely fallen in. There is no avenue to reach the outer wings (rooms) of the massive home. So enjoy the images that I was able to capture of the property and the surrounding grounds.
