What If
Mas Band: Cable & Wireless Contact Band
Theme: The People Who Came
Section: East Indians
Band Leader: Anthony Layne
Designer: Chesterfield Haynes
Location: National Stadium, St. Michael, Barbados
Series: Barbados Crop Over 2007 - Kadooment Day
(08-06-2007)

So you buy a costume for $300 (Barbados Dollars) and you are rearing to go. The stage awaits you, and the music is boiling inside you. You grab a drink and all things seem possible. That is the easy part.

But sometimes we forget the costumes designers and band leaders. They have to come up with some theme clever enough to grip the attention of the revelers and the viewers every year. I am sure it is hard work. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of costumes have to be made to accommodate the ever rising influx of people who want to just jump in a band. Young or old, it does not matter. The revelers want to look beautiful in their costumes. They want a whole lot of bang for their dollars.

So here is a big thank you to the designers and band leaders that keep the carnival moving every year in Barbados. Think of what Crop Over would be like without designers, band leaders and all the other folks that make it happen.

NOTE:
New images of Kadooment Day 2007 will be added from time to time as I edit and process them. So check back when time permits. Thanks.

Old Bladeless Windmill
Belmont Road Area

Series: Barbados: To the Capital
(07-23-2007)

I am on my way to the capital, Bridgetown, but photo opportunities are proving hard to come by. The rain is slightly sporadic and the window to the car is closed. There will be a few stops on the way. Maybe, I can with some maneuvering, manage to capture a few things.

Well it looks like I am going to get a chance to shoot a windmill in a now populated area that I am sure was once plantation land.

Sometime in the history of this great land I am sure this windmill was of some use either in crushing sugarcane or pumping water. But these notable pieces come with a history of enslavement. This was when sugar was king, and slavery was the order of the day.

This beautiful old structure is the Colonnade Building. Situated on the top of this lovely building is the1898 sign. So, I am assuming that is either when it was built or some significant thing happened that year.

It is located in downtown Broad Street and is now called DaCostas Mall. More than 25 shops (mostly Duty Free) make up the mall and sell everything from liquor, jewelry, to postcards.
